At 8 years old, Dawud Scharrieff spends his summer days surrounded by occupational and physical therapists who aid and applaud his efforts to walk gracefully. For a typical child of that age, he would be years behind developmentally. But as a child with cerebral palsy, he's doing great.

"When we first came here, he couldn't even stand on his knees," his mother, Aminah, said, speaking of the Steps to Independence program at United Cerebral Palsy in Cleveland. "Now he can brush his own teeth."
